What we check, line by line
Rates against your contract
Every unit rate and standing charge on the bill, compared with what you signed up to.
VAT at the right rate
Businesses using under 33 kWh of electricity or 145 kWh of gas a day may qualify for 5% VAT instead of 20%.
Climate Change Levy
Not charged on supplies under the same small-use thresholds, and reduced for some eligible businesses.
Estimated and actual reads
Long runs of estimates can hide overcharging, then arrive as one large catch-up bill.
Back-billing
Ofgem’s rules limit how far back an energy supplier can bill a small business when the delay was the supplier’s fault.
Water charges
Surface water drainage, sewerage and trade effluent, checked against how your site actually works.
What a finding looks like
Typical problems, where to spot them on your bill, and what we do about each one.
| The problem | Where it shows on your bill | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| VAT charged at 20% on a small supply | VAT line at the bottom of the bill | We ask the supplier to apply 5% and refund the difference |
| Unit rate higher than the contract | Charges section, price per kWh | We send the supplier the signed contract and claim the overcharge |
| Billed on estimates for a year | Reads marked E instead of A | We get actual reads submitted and the account rebilled |
| Old charges on a new bill | A large “adjustment” or catch-up line | We check whether back-billing rules cap what you owe |
Our recovery fee: Free for customers who buy their energy through us.
Questions people ask us
How far back can you check?
We start with your recent bills, then go back as far as your supplier holds records if we find a problem. How much can be recovered depends on the supplier and the type of error.
What does a bill check cost?
Looking at your bills is free. If we recover money for you, our fee is agreed in writing before we start, and you’ll know the exact amount.
Do I need to change supplier?
No. Bill checks work whoever your supplier is, and you can use them without switching.
What do you need from me?
Copies of recent bills, ideally 12 months, and a letter of authority so we can talk to your supplier on your behalf.
Send us a bill. We’ll show you what’s in it.
A free review takes about 20 minutes. We check what you’re paying, tell you when your contract really ends, and show you any quotes with our fee on them. No obligation to switch.
